Planning a new machinery electrical installation should begin well before the equipment arrives at your factory or workshop.
Whether you are investing in a CNC machine, laser cutter, compressor, production equipment or another piece of specialist machinery, the electrical requirements need to be considered alongside the machine itself.
A new machine arriving on site does not necessarily mean it can simply be positioned, connected and switched on. Different machinery can have very different electrical requirements, and your existing installation may need alterations before the equipment can be commissioned.
Involving a commercial or industrial electrician before the machinery arrives can identify potential problems early and help avoid unnecessary delays to installation and production.

1. Check the Electrical Requirements Before Ordering
Ideally, your electrician should have access to the manufacturer’s electrical specifications as early as possible.
Important information can include:
- supply voltage
- single-phase or three-phase requirements
- maximum current or electrical load
- starting current
- recommended protective devices
- isolation requirements
- connection method
- requirements for associated equipment
HSE guidance recommends considering where and how machinery will be used before purchasing it, while electrical equipment should be suitable for the electrical supply it will be connected to.
The existing supply also needs to be capable of providing the current required by the equipment.
Finding this out before delivery gives you time to make any necessary electrical alterations.
2. Does Your Existing Electrical Installation Have Enough Capacity?
The fact that a building already has three-phase power doesn’t automatically mean there is sufficient capacity for another substantial electrical load.
An electrician can assess the existing installation and consider factors such as:
- incoming electrical supply
- existing loads
- available capacity
- distribution boards
- protective devices
- existing cable sizes and routes
- the proposed machinery load
If additional capacity or alterations are required, these can then be planned before the machine is installed.
This becomes particularly important when a business has expanded gradually. Additional machinery, air conditioning, compressors, EV chargers and other equipment can all increase demand on an electrical installation over time.
3. Single-Phase or Three-Phase?
Many larger pieces of industrial machinery require a three-phase electrical supply.
Three-phase power is commonly used for equipment such as CNC machinery, compressors, motors, production equipment and other higher-powered industrial loads.
If the required supply is not already available in the correct location, electrical work may be needed to provide it.
Even where three-phase power is present elsewhere in the building, the machine may require a new circuit, local distribution alterations or a dedicated supply to its proposed position.
This is why knowing exactly where the machine is going can be just as important as knowing its electrical specification.
4. Is the Distribution Board Suitable?
The existing distribution board also needs to be considered.
There may be insufficient spare capacity, or alterations may be required to provide the correct circuit and protection for the new equipment.
Depending on the installation and manufacturer’s requirements, the work could involve:
- new circuits
- distribution board alterations
- new protective devices
- additional local distribution
- new cable routes
- local isolation
Assessing this beforehand allows the electrical work to be coordinated with the machinery delivery rather than becoming an unexpected obstacle afterwards.
5. Think About More Than the Machine Itself
The main machine may not be the only new electrical load.
Associated equipment could include:
- extraction systems
- compressors
- pumps
- cooling or ventilation equipment
- control equipment
- ancillary production machinery
These additional requirements should form part of the electrical planning.
A machine might therefore require one supply while its extraction, cooling or other supporting equipment requires another.
6. Positioning the Machine Can Affect the Electrical Work
Where the machinery will sit within the factory or workshop can have a significant effect on the installation.
An electrician may need to consider how power will reach the machine, where isolation will be located and whether existing electrical infrastructure needs to be altered.
Planning this before delivery can also make it easier to coordinate the electrical contractor with machinery suppliers, installers and other trades.
Once several tonnes of machinery have been positioned on a factory floor, changing the plan can become considerably more difficult.
7. Don’t Forget Safe Isolation, Testing and Commissioning
Industrial machinery needs to be properly connected and capable of being safely isolated.
HSE guidance under PUWER states that work equipment should have suitable health and safety measures, including adequate means of isolation from sources of energy where appropriate. Where the safety of equipment depends on how it has been installed, inspection is required after installation and before first use.
For electrical installation work, the new or altered circuit should also be appropriately inspected, tested and verified before being put into service.
This is another reason why machinery installation should be considered as a planned project rather than simply connecting equipment when it arrives.
A Real Example: New Laser Machinery at Camberley Signs
LS Electrical supported Camberley Signs when the company replaced the main laser machine within its workshop.
The new laser had different electrical load and supply requirements from the previous equipment. Our electricians safely disconnected the old machine and altered the electrical installation ready for the replacement.
Once the new laser was in position, LS Electrical returned to complete the final connections, including the three-phase extraction system, followed by the appropriate electrical testing and verification.
It is a good example of why involving your electrician before new machinery arrives can help identify requirements in advance and minimise disruption during installation.

After making a significant investment in new machinery, the last thing a business wants is for it to arrive and then discover that the electrical infrastructure isn’t ready.
Potential problems could include an inadequate supply, no suitable circuit at the machine location, insufficient distribution capacity or additional electrical requirements that weren’t considered when the equipment was ordered.
Early electrical involvement means these issues can be identified while there is still time to deal with them.
Before Your New Machinery Arrives, Ask:
- Do we have the manufacturer’s full electrical specification?
- Is it single-phase or three-phase?
- Does our existing supply have sufficient capacity?
- Is the distribution board suitable?
- Does the machine require a dedicated circuit?
- What isolation is required?
- Does extraction, cooling or ancillary equipment require separate supplies?
- Where exactly will the machine be positioned?
- Can the electrical work be completed before delivery?
- Who will complete the final electrical connection, testing and verification?
